A uPick Experience, the Way It’s Meant to Feel

A uPick Experience, the Way It’s Meant to Feel

Feb 20, 2026Janell Vera

Most people don’t come to a uPick because they need flowers.

They come because they want time.
Because they want to slow down.
Because something in them needs a pause — even if they can’t quite name it yet.

That’s what uPick looks like at First Roots Farm.

It’s not rushed.
It’s not a free-for-all.
And it’s not about grabbing as much as you can and getting out.

It’s about being here.

What a uPick Is — and What Ours Isn’t

When people hear “uPick,” they often imagine wandering into a field, cutting whatever they want, and figuring it out as they go.

Our uPick is more intentional than that.

At First Roots Farm in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin, uPick events are ticketed and scheduled on purpose. That allows us to keep the experience calm, spacious, and enjoyable — for the flowers and for the people walking through them.

You’re not competing for stems.
You’re not navigating crowds.
You’re not guessing what’s okay to cut.

You arrive knowing there’s room for you.

Walking the Fields

The first thing most people notice is how quiet it feels.

Not silent — just settled.

You’re surrounded by rows of flowers grown specifically to be cut and enjoyed. Seasonal blooms at their peak. Color that shifts as the weeks go on. Texture you don’t see in everyday bouquets.

We provide snips, a container, and simple guidance. From there, you move at your own pace.

Some people take their time, examining every bloom.
Some move quickly, following instinct.
Some talk the whole way through.
Others barely say a word.

All of it is welcome.

Choosing Flowers for Yourself

One of the most meaningful parts of a uPick is realizing you don’t need to know anything about flowers to enjoy them.

You don’t need to know names
You don’t need a plan.
You don’t need to get it “right.”

You choose what draws you in.

Maybe it’s color.
Maybe it’s shape.
Maybe it’s something you’ve never seen before.

The bouquet that comes together is always a reflection of the person making it — even when they don’t realize that’s what’s happening.

Who Comes to a uPick

Our uPick guests look like a lot of different things.

Families making a memory together.
Friends catching up after a busy season of life.

Moms are taking a quiet hour for themselves.
Couples wandering the fields hand in hand.

People are coming back again and again because it’s become part of their rhythm.

Some arrive with kids in tow.
Some arrive alone.
Some come multiple times a season

There’s no “right” reason to be here.

Flowers That Change With the Season

Because we’re a working flower farm, what you’ll find in the field changes as the season unfolds.

Early uPick events look different than late-summer ones. Colors deepen. Varieties shift. Dahlias take center stage. Texture becomes richer.

That’s part of the experience — seeing what’s growing right now, not what’s been promised months in advance.

It’s one of the reasons so many people return. No two visits feel exactly the same.

Why Our uPicks are Ticketed

We’re often asked why our uPick events are limited and ticketed.

The simple answer: care.

Care for the flowers.
Care for the land.
Care for the experience.

Limiting numbers means:

  • The fields stay healthy

  • Guests have space to move and choose

  • The experience feels relaxed, not chaotic

Once you arrive, it’s all about having fun. Your tickets are already purchased, so check-in is quick and easy. We’ll get you your snips and a basket, and then you’re free to mosey through the flower fields.

If You’re Thinking About Coming

If you’ve never done a uPick before, this is a good place to start.

If you’ve done one elsewhere and it felt hectic, this will feel different.

And if you’ve been here before, you already know — it’s something you come back to, season after season.

Because sometimes what you need isn’t just flowers.

It’s time among them.
