All mystery tubers are randomly selected. Our mystery bundles include a range of colors, forms, and bloom sizes. While duplicates may occur, we do our best to include a diverse selection of varieties.

At First Roots Farm in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin, dahlias are one of our specialties. What started with a single row has grown into more than 7,000 plants and 135 varieties, with a focus on dahlias that produce beautiful blooms, strong stems, and exceptional cut flowers.
We grow our dahlias with both home gardeners and flower farmers in mind, selecting varieties that bring incredible color and texture to gardens, bouquets, and floral arrangements.
Every tuber we sell is grown, harvested, washed, and divided right here on our farm. We're proud to share our field-grown dahlia tubers with growers across the country, from those planting their very first tubers to experienced flower farmers expanding their collections.
First Roots Farm Dahlia FAQ
Our Mystery Dahlia Tuber Sale takes place every year in mid-October. It's one of our most anticipated sales of the year and a chance to add beautiful, field-grown dahlias to your garden. Tubers ship in the fall shortly after harvest, and quantities are limited. Our mystery tubers have sold out quickly in the past, so we recommend joining our newsletter for sale announcements.
We also offer labeled dahlia varieties in the spring, with availability based on our remaining inventory.
Mystery tubers are healthy, unlabeled dahlia tubers grown right here in our cut-flower fields. They're a great option for gardeners and flower farmers looking to add beautiful blooms, color, and abundance to their gardens at an affordable price.
Our labeled dahlia tubers are sold separately in the spring.
We offer bundles of 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 or 60 tubers, each hand-divided and inspected before shipping. Every tuber has at least one visible eye.
All tubers are sold individually, not as clumps. Each tuber is divided by hand and inspected to confirm it has at least one visible eye before shipping.
We guarantee that each tuber will have at least one viable eye when shipped. However, once they arrive, growth depends on proper storage, planting conditions, and weather — all of which are outside our control.
We currently ship within the United States only.
We can’t modify existing orders once placed. If you’d like to purchase additional tubers, please place a new order — it will be processed and shipped separately.
What if my tubers arrive damaged?
Please inspect your tubers as soon as they arrive. If there are any issues, email us at firstrootsfarm@gmail.com within 4 days of delivery. Clear photos of the damaged tubers and packaging are required.
We'll help file a claim with USPS if applicable and work to make it right where possible.
We're unable to issue refunds or replacements for losses due to improper storage, weather, or planting conditions. Any issues with your tubers must be reported within 4 days of delivery to be eligible for a refund or adjustment.

Keep them in a cool, dry place (around 40–50°F). A basement or insulated garage works well. Avoid overly damp areas — excess moisture can cause rot.
We use vermiculite at First Roots Farm for winter storage.
Wait until the risk of frost has passed and soil temperatures reach at least 55°F. Plant tubers 4–6 inches deep in well-draining soil and full sun.

Inventory isn’t reserved until checkout is complete.
Orders shipped without a heat pack during cold weather are sent at the customer’s own risk. First Roots Farm is not responsible for tubers that freeze, suffer cold damage, or become non-viable in transit if a heat pack was not purchased. We highly recommend adding one when temperatures are expected to drop below 40°F along your shipping route.
If adding heat protection, purchase one 72-hour heat pack for each mystery tuber bundle ordered. For example, if you purchase three 60 Mystery Tuber bundles, add three heat packs to your cart. Heat packs must be purchased at the same time as your tubers.
We're a family farm, and our team is working as quickly as possible to dig, wash, divide, and inspect every dahlia tuber before shipping. We expect all fall-shipping Mystery Tuber orders to ship by November 18, 2026.
Orders ship in the order they are received, and shipping labels are only created when we're ready to pack and ship your tubers. Once your shipping label is created, you'll automatically receive an email with your USPS tracking information.
Orders ship via USPS Priority Mail Flat Rate, with an estimated delivery time of 2–3 days. Please allow 24 hours for tracking updates to appear after USPS receives your package.
